Agriculture Innovations
April 02, 2015

The Monterey Bay Region is home to some of the most fertile land in the world. Combine this with all of the innovative people who live here, and you have the foundation for creating a whole new industry of specialized food products and services. And given that our region is already a world renowned tourist destination (especially eco-tourism), having a niche food industry will only enhance this allure. But, we need to tell this story, and this is where MBEP can help.

Our region already has a well established agricultural industry that spans all three counties and has defined the area for generations. The Salinas Valley, hailed as “the salad bowl” of the United States, produces close to 80 percent of all of the leafy greens consumed nationally. Our counties are also the leading national producers of berries.

And beyond the incredible bounty of our local land, our region is famous for agricultural innovation. Santa Cruz County was central to the birth of the organic foods movement, having founded California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) and the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS). To this day UC Santa Cruz is still the only major university with an entire organic farm on-site that certifies up and coming farmers.

It’s programs like this that will attract the next generation of foodies to come here, where they can get the mentorship they need and the locally sourced and organic ingredients, all while having easy access to a continuous influx of new customers. The Monterey Bay Region will continue to lead in the field of agriculture, and MBEP will continue to support programs that encourage new enterprises, support existing companies, and work to brand the region as the go to place for food innovation.
